BA Hons Dip Mus LRAM
Dorothy grew up in the London Borough of Redbridge and was educated at Woodford County High School for Girls. In 1963 she gained an Exhibition to Junior Trinity College of Music, London, where she studied piano and musicianship for a number of years under Kathleen Crees and Robert Plowright. She also studied violin with Susan Sheppard and played in the EFYMA Youth Orchestra on a number of occasions.
Throughout her career she has been much in demand as a teacher in Private Practice, working from her Studio at home, formerly in Berkshire and now in Hampshire, welcoming pupils of all abilities aged from 5 to adult.
Dorothy has worked both in State secondary and primary schools and in Preparatory and Public schools, teaching classroom music, group recorder, piano and music theory. She has considerable experience as an examination accompanist and also offers aural coaching.
The publication in 2006 of Pass Grade 5 Theory, followed in 2007 by Pass Grade 3 Theory and in 2013 the Pass Grade 5 Theory Answer Book, both in response to consumer demand, has led to a wider recognition of her skills. Pass Grade 5 Theory has received excellent reviews and both volumes are in regular use by teachers and schools nationwide. In 2007 and 2008 she wrote two series of articles on the teaching of music theory. One was published in Music Teacher Magazine and the other in Ensemble, the journal of the Music Masters and Mistresses Association.
As an acknowledged expert in the teaching of music theory, Dorothy has provided intensive one-to-one crash-course coaching for GCSE students without a classical music background who need to bring their music literacy skills up to Grade 5 standard before embarking on an A-level music course. She also offers individual theory courses to pupils in her locality.
Dorothy currently has vacancies for pupils.
